Wealthy trader gets sore throat and goes to the doctor - can you guess the bill ?

---

I've just read a great book by Emanuel Derman where he explains those heady days when Wall Street was the place to be a bright, mathematically-trained guy, and where major investment banks paid phenomenal salaries because they believed a former physicist could accurately calculate the risk of each of their positions, and use computers and arithmetic to stop them going under - "My life as a quant".

See more about the book via this Amazon link:
My life as a quant book

A quant is someone who knows all the sums that a "quantitative financial analyst" should know.

Have you heard of the Black-Scholes option pricing model ? Well Dr Derman (the quant in the book) worked for Dr Black at Goldman Sachs and writes a brilliantly illuminating portrait of the man, his thorough and careful approach to financial modelling, and his methods.

See the Amazon link above for further details of these very highly paid, halcyon Wall Street days in the Reader's Comments.

Josh take note - don't bother with a general MBA - take Wilmott's Certificate of Quantitative Analysis.

Wilmott is pre-eminent in the field of trader's sums:
Why Wilmott's website is the place to be

Wilmott's introductory book is a hefty tome:
Introduction to quantitative finance

Wilmott's complete course - Wow! That's heavy:
Wilmott's complete course for certification

Anyway, having enjoyed the quant book, I now follow his blog. The other day he felt unwell and went to the doctor.

Another example of keen financial analysis - recession ? What recession ?
